Linguistic Imperialism and Standard Language Ideology in an English Textbook Used in China

چکیده

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated how language textbooks serve as an arena for ideological reproduction. Following the theory ideology, this paper aims to examine representation English in a textbook targeting Chinese university students China. Data were subjected content analysis and critical discourse regarding their reference embodied identity options, images, case studies, cultural notes, exercises, dialogues, reading passages textbook. Findings reveals that by highlighting dominant position simplifying multilingual landscape, tends place at center prominence. The dominance is further entrenched expressions values speaking Standard English. It argued ideology can be understood global penetration linguistic imperialism. Furthermore, also reproduces biased gender class social characters, which might exacerbate learners’ prejudice towards certain groups on basis understandings real-life power relations. hoped study shed some lights providing learners with more diversified cultivating awareness intercultural competence.
